ILL EQUIPPED: AVENGED SEVENFOLD NIXES TWO GIGS!
Avenged Sevenfold was forced to cancel last night's planned concert in Quebec City and tonight's in Montreal due to "artist illness." As was previously reported, last Sunday's show in Baltimore was also cancelled. Last month, the band announced it was scrapping a series of UK dates because of singer Matt Shadow's throat problems. The two Canadian shows are expected to be rescheduled.

GOING NOWHERE: ARREST MADE IN OASIS ASSAULT!
An arrest has been made stemming from Sunday's onstage attack of Oasis guitarist/singer Noel Gallagher while he was performing as part of the Virgin Festival in Toronto. Local police have arrested Daniel Sullivan and charged him with assault. His unprovoked attack on Gallagher resulted in the rock star suffering ligament damage and a possible fractured rib and forced the group to cancel last night's planned show in London, Ontario, Canada.

NO BULL: SONIC YOUTH INKS MATADOR DEAL!
Sonic Youth will release its next studio album (due next year) through indie label Matador Records, frontman Thurston Moore tells Billboard magazine. "Matador is a super strong, high-profile label with an indie distribution system that is exactly what a band like us in this current climate needs more than anything," he said. The band's last album with Geffen Records was 2006's Rather Ripped.

SOUL OF A MAN: AMOS LEE BARES, SHARES HIS!
Singer/songwriter/soul man Amos Lee's voice harkens back to the unforgettable vocals of some of music's most important and potent names: Curtis Mayfield, Teddy Pendergrass, Al Green, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, and on and on and on. Throughout his brilliant set Monday at the Music Box in the heart of Hollywood, Lee, whose third album, Last Days at the Lodge is in stores now, displayed a range of emotion via his emotive tunes generally reserved for the top-shelf talent mentioned above. Relationship-driven songs such as "What's Been Going On" and socially conscious cuts like "Jails and Bombs" from Last Days build a bridge to Gaye's classic What's Going On album, while Lee's current classic, "Won't Let Me Go," deals with crossing that classic friends-to-lovers bridge. With apologies to Fenway Park's giant left field wall, the real green monster – jealousy – rears its ugly head a few times throughout Last Days at the Lodge, especially in "Truth" and "What's Been Going On." Catch Lee performing September 26 on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Lee's tour continues Friday in Reno, NV and Sunday in Tucson, AZ. Be sure to visit www.amoslee.com for a full list of tour dates and be sure to spend days, weeks, months and years with Last Days at the Lodge.

PUSH-PULL: STEREOPHONICS' 'UPLIFTING' SONG BLASTS!
Despite its grenade-influenced titled Pull the Pin album having just arrived in stores, Stereophonics frontman Kelley Jones says the band has already demoed "about six or eight songs" for its next album. "The songs are very, very kind of big melodies and have that euphoric kind of sound," Jones tells Billboard. "I don't know where that comes from, but they're very uplifting kinds of songs. The band's in a good place right now." The band is also in several good places – literally – right now, having recently launched a U.S. tour, which stops tomorrow in Washington, DC and runs through a September 21 show in Seattle.

CORE BUSINESS: APPLE UNVEILS, UPGRADES NEW IPODS!
Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson helped Apple chief Steve Jobs introduce the latest line of beefed up iPods by treating Apple's assembled audience to a brief performance. But clearly the star of the show, dubbed "Let's Rock," was the new line of iPods, which includes a newer, thinner iPod Touch and iPod Nanos as well as an upgraded, juiced up classic iPod, the 80GB model at 120GB but staying at the same $249 price. The new generation of iPods will be in stores for the holidays.

DARK SIDE OF THE NEWS: GILMOUR PULLS PINK'S PLUG!
Former – emphasis on former – Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour – again – told fans and reporters there would not be another Pink Floyd reunion. Speaking to reporters on his London houseboat, Gilmour said, "There have been all sorts of farewell moments in people's lives and careers which they have then rescinded, but I think I can fairly categorically say that there won't be a tour or an album again that I take part in." Ironically, the event that gave fans hope a reunion would occur, 2005's Live 8 reunion, was the very incident that made Gilmour so sure there would be no further reunions. "The gig itself was excellent, really enjoyable," he said. "The rehearsals were less enjoyable. The rehearsals convinced me it wasn't something I wanted to be doing a lot of."

HEART ATTACK: WILSON SISTERS PLOT NEXT ALBUM!
According to Nancy Wilson of Heart, the band's next studio effort will be "a concept album," but further details surrounding the record are still a precious commodity. "I think it's a really fresh idea," she tells Billboard, "so I'm not quite ready to unveil it yet. I don't want other people to rip us off. So I'm keeping the details quiet right now." Nancy and her sister Ann are already writing songs for the future release, which will be the follow-up to 2004's Jupiter's Darling.

That makes sense on some level."

FACE VALUE: COLLINS FACES RECORD DIVORCE!
Phil Collins hasn't learned his lesson and certainly doesn't listen to his own lyrics. Track 3, side 2 of his 1985 No Jacket Required album is called "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore." That said, having well, missed again at marriage No. 3 will cost him a cool $46 million. That's the genesis of his latest divorce settlement and the value placed on se-se-settling his affairs with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, who after telling Collins, "Hello, I must be going," walked away with the biggest divorce payout ever in the UK, even bigger than Paul McCartney's recent check to Heather Mills. McKagan confirmed to Billboard that the band did play with Langdon and that "he's f***ing awesome, at this point I'd have to say no" on him replacing Weiland. "We just have to make sure it's the right guy," Duff adds. "It's a tough thing, man."

The Police last week said goodbye for good following their final farewell concert at New York's Madison Square Garden. Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland kicked off their last show ever with a surprise cover of the Cream classic "Sunshine Of Your Love," followed immediately by – appropriately enough – the New York Police Department band joining them onstage for "Message in a Bottle." At one point, Sting acknowledged the band's record-breaking reunion tour, telling the audience, "It's been a huge honor to get back with my good friends," before switching gears, saying, "The real triumph of this tour is that we haven't strangled each other – that doesn't mean it hadn't crossed my mind." Michaels told a national radio audience: "I'm a Def Leppard fan. Joe Elliott, I don't really know, but he seems like a decent guy…I don't wanna fight Joe. I'm not in a fight with Def Leppard."

???!
Metallica bassist James Hetfield wants fans and critics alike to know that just because he and drummer Lars Ulrich have compared their upcoming Death Magnetic (due Sept. 12) to their classic albums like Master Of Puppets, the band is not ripping off itself. Hetfield told MTV: "The last thing I want is someone to think, 'Oh, they had to go back to Puppets because that was the best album, and they're doing it because we want it.' If we start writing songs for our fans, something's gone wrong. At the end of the day, we have to write it because we love it."

ANTHEMS FOR THE CRAMMED: FILTER ROX L.A.'S ROXY!
To say the Roxy on Hollywood's Sunset Strip Saturday was packed with fans there to see Filter would be understating the scene by well, a lot! With fire marshals on the prowl and at the ready, frontman Richard Patrick hit the stage wearing a military jacket, appropriate for the band's new anti-war, pro-troops-themed Anthems for the Damned album and single, "Soldiers of Misfortune." Exactly one high-paced, high-decibel highlight-filled hour later, Patrick and the band were off the stage, but not before ripping through a set that included "American Cliché," "Where Do We Go From Here," "Cancer" and the Black Sabbath-soaked "Dose" as well as "Soldiers" off Anthems and "Hey Man, Nice Shot," among others. Cell phones hoisted high taking digital picture after picture after picture, the crowd coaxed Filter back for encores that included the obviously appropriate "Take a Picture" as well as "Captain Bligh" and "Skinny." Filter takes a well-deserved two-week break before resuming its tour July 26 in Sayreville, NJ.

SHINEDOWN SHRUG OFF LINEUP CHANGES!
Shinedown, currently on the road with Theory of a Deadman and Black Stone Cherry in support of it’s The Sound of Madness album, are adjusting to recent adjustments – three, in fact – in the band's lineup. "The guys that were with us before just didn't work out," drummer Barry Kerch says to Allentown, PA's The Weekender of the three changes that led to the addition of guitarists Zach Myers and Nick Perri and the appropriately named bassist Eric Bass, of whom Kerch says, "We're playing better live than we have in years because of the levels of musicianship these guys have." That level of musicianship will be on display Wednesday at Crocodile Rock in Allentown.

"Patrick's obviously been writing all the music," Pete says, "and the words haven't even come in play yet. SAD SAD SAD: STONES WOOD FALLS FOR TEEN!
Hopefully, this story is as true as last week's bogus David Lee Roth's life threatening allergic reaction to nuts and being saved by two Canadian police story. According to British tabloid the Daily Mail, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, 61, has left his wife of 23 years, Jo, and four kids for an 18-year old Russian cocktail waitress. Wood reportedly met Ekaterina Ivanova about three months ago at an escort bar. A spokesperson for Wood, who for years has battled alcoholism, said they met while he was in a deep depression, gripped by the bottle, and claims the teenager is "a drinking partner. When you're an alcoholic and your family are telling you to stop drinking you simply find someone else to drink with."

HEAVY METAL NOIZE STILL BIGGEST, BEST BUZZ!
According to an article in Canada's Vancouver Sun, heavy metal music is not only here to stay, it is hear to pay. The paper offers as proof the fact that Iron Maiden sold out the local Coliseum last month, Judas Priest has sold 12,000 tickets for its upcoming concert July 24 at the city's GM Place arena and Motley Crue sold out the same venue for its August 11 show. A concert industry insider explains the economic weight of heavy metal by saying, "They've brought in the younger fans who have sort of gone to them as the symbols or fathers of how this all started. So metal's always been kept alive, because of teenage angst I guess."
